Kendi & The Daily Fashionista have been doing a 30for30 Challenge: "The deal is to pick out 30 items from your closet and remix them into different looks for 30 days. There is also no shopping for new clothes for the next 30 days. " Hmm. Does the 30 include accessories & shoes? I'm hoping not*. I think I could do this. The first part anyway. No shopping until early September? Yikes.
*Just found some fine print on Kendi's blog; accessories & scarves are not included in the 30, but shoes are. Eeek.
Okay. So, IF I were to attempt this starting, say, tomorrow... she's got it divided into the following (claiming afterward that she should've gone with more color & more fun shoe choices - good to know):
8 Tops.
5 Pants.
4 Skirts.
4 Dresses.
3 Jackets.
6 Shoes (she did 3 brown pairs and 3 black).
Now... I don't need jackets if I do this in August, do I? Maybe one cardigan? And in August, one doesn't need 5 pairs of pants but maybe 4 pairs of shorts and 1 pair of jeans... So, I'll brainstorm:
--- 9 Tops: denim long-sleeve button-up, 1 tank top, 1 rayon/silk pok-a-dotted top, and then 3 tees?
--- 7 Bottoms: Silver worn-in jeans? Levi's cut-off shorts, Old Navy shorts, floral shorts from Alloy, nice white shorts? and...
--- 6 Dresses: black one, floral one, striped tunic...
--- 7 Shoes: 3 flats and 3 wedges? One pair of flippy-floppies.
--- 1 Cardigan.
--- Unlimited hats, scarves, and accessories. Yay.
I'll have to think about it. It sounds like a challenge though. A big one.

playing catch-up?

Song of the Exile.

This one is from Knight Cat. So are the four following ones.

Fashion Hippie Loves.

Ashlee's gotten scrawny, eh? I still like the outfit.

Above: Fade to Black.

Above: Adeline Rapon.
So, I have two denim button-ups. A light colored one, and a dark one. Both from The Gap. And then I have a denim cropped jacket. I can't wait to utilize them ... with denim jeans, floral dresses, white jeans, black dresses and skirts and floral shorts (recently, from Alloy).
I want to wear more hair things too, this fall. Like shown in Adeline Rapon's blog pic above (& Ashlee's sporting one too). Something I haven't done = wear many, many necklaces... really layer 'em on. It'd be interesting & maybe too overwhelming for class? Hmph.
This weekend, I scored a vintage pair of white heels, a pair of Old Navy wedges, and Kenzie booties. Via my Alloy.com shipment, I got a pair of wedged booties with fake fur on 'em AND some Jeffrey Campbell look-a-likes (the black wedged booties) are coming too. I think I bought two pairs of sandals via Urban Outfitters which will plop into my mailbox this week too.
I rounded up a lot of clothes this weekend. The $60 at Savers (w/30% coupon too!) lead to the heels and wedges and Wranglers and lace dress and denim romper and wicker-ish bag and eyelet kimono and floral pj-like top and... two necklaces and... probably more. At Plato's for about $40 w/a 20% coupon, I got an across-the-body bag (grey, studded, PVC) and Big Star jeans. The store next door lead to a $3 pok-a-dotted rayon vintage top. The Clothes Mentor had the Kenzie booties and a pink V-neck tee (left at bf's).
At Target, I got some earrings (neon green and pretty blue) as well as a graffiti-ish dress (that has a girlie shape to it). At Old Navy, I grabbed navy shorts and a great green button-up that's somewhat see-through.
Last night, I made a head piece out of white hemp & brown beads. Today, I plan to paint some dresses (the green Target one from Dakota Boys Ranch... the beige linen dress...) and a blazer; I'd like to do something to the huge floral babydoll I bought awhile back. It's too big and maybe I'll screw around with it a bit to see what can be done. I'd like to shred a tee today too. I want to have a creative and not academic day. :o)

celebration weekend.
To celebrate hitting my deadline w/the Chuck chapter and Ph.D. application, I shopped until I pretty much dropped yesterday. After breakfast at Target (and returning a dress = +$12?), I spent about $50 there (another dress, cat litter, earrings, lactaid, scarf, etc.). Then, I hit Gordman's to return a top there (+$12?). From there, I went to Savers around noon (missing lunch, really) and spent $60 with a 30% off coupon (many, many items including a lace dress, two pairs of heels, old school Wranglers, silky top, etc. etc.). I was on a roll with using coupons, so I went to the Plato's Closet strip mall and spent $5 at the shop next door (pokadotted vintage top) then $40 at Plato's w/a 20% coupon (Big Star jeans + across-the-body grey PVC bag)... then Clothes Mentor ($20 on Kenzie boots and a pink V-neck tee).
Today, after breakfast, I went to Old Navy. Haven't been there in MONTHS. Found a really great green top (very flattering color for me & my hair color) + navy shorts... $20 w/$10off coupon. I highly doubt I will need to do any back-to-school shopping since I have two shipments coming in from Alloy.com and UrbanOutfitters.com next week.
I've noticed that it isn't about how much I spend, it's the amount (and quality). Spending $60 at Savers seems like a lot since I get a truckload of stuff, but I used to spend that without thinking at the Gap on two items. And the Savers stuff is of the same quality or better, usually.
I was telling my sister at breakfast that it's about having things in my closet that I love. I really need to go through and take out things on a constant basis. For example, I have this one Converse black cardigan that I wore to death last fall/winter. I love it. The other black cardigans I have are okay, but eh. Hopefully, I'll get to the point where everything in my closet is awesome & loved.
There are people doing The Great American Apparel Diet (I have the web site connected to my Google Reader). I think I could do that - not buy new for a year - but I like the idea too of "for everything that comes in your house, something has to go out" because if I got rid of the stuff I don't like and bought loveable clothes, I could go a year and just buy shoes. :o) Maybe. I doubt myself when it comes to my favorite stress-reliever. :D

-Long navy w/cream pok-a-dots blazer that could be belted over leggings.
-Mini-spring-dresses with thick tights & long cardigans.
-Make short furry bag into an across-the-body bag. Yep.
